On the Plains

A wise man will hear and increase in learning,
And a man of understanding will acquire wise counsel.
Proverbs 1:5

I had an opportunity to ride through the campus of Auburn University recently.  I saw Toomer's Corner, and the now infamous tree murder. I rode by the stadium where they play football.  And, I spent a few minutes photographing the building where it all began.  Well, sort of where it all began.  The building pictured here is Samford Hall.  This building was actually constructed to replace the original Samford Hall which was destroyed by fire in 1887. Still in use today, Samford Hall houses Administrative offices.

The East Alabama Male School was established in 1856 and was originally operated by the Methodist Church. In 1872 the name was changed to the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.  In 1899 there was another name change to Alabama Polytechnic Institute. Not until 1960 did the name officially change to Auburn University.

The bell in the tower originally sounded every hour for classes.

My Georgia Bulldog friends will have a good time knowing that Auburn first admitted women in 1892, the same year they organized their first football team.
